NEWS NEW TYRNOS SALTWATER TROLLING REELS OFFER REDUCED PROFILE TOP CROSSBAR, A-RB BEARINGS January 05, 2005 IRVINE, Calif. 1/05 — Putting lures back into the spread after a jig strike, or dropping back baits to fish boiling behind the boat is accomplished quickly with the open top crossbar design of Shimano’s new Tyrnos saltwater trolling reels. Offered in two sizes, the Tyrnos (TYR) 20 and Tyrnos 30, the reels feature Shimano’s specially treated stainless steel A-RB anti-rust bearings that provide up to 10 times more corrosion resistance than standard stainless steel ball bearings. “With the reels’ open top crossbar design, anglers can easily drop the reel into freespool, “said Jeremy Sweet with Shimano’s product development staff, “and then just as quickly put it back into the strike position – all without ever having the take the rod and reel out of the rod holder.” Sweet notes the Tyrnos reels offer key features designed primarily for trolling situations. “Along with the line control provided by the open top crossbar, we’ve also provided a ratcheting lever drag to eliminate any lever movement caused by boat vibration,” Sweet said. “Plus, the Tyrnos’ loud clicker offers enough tension to hold large baits in the spread or in heavy current, and can easily be heard above engine noise.” Additional features include oversized gears for power while maintaining a high-speed 5.0:1 gear ratio, and an extra-long handle shank with an oversized ergonomic rubber power grip. “Along with the added torque from the handle design, it has a bent shank that moves the grip closer to the reel for less wobble during retrieves,” notes Sweet. The TYR20 and TYR30 are constructed with diecast aluminum frames for strength and durability, and graphite sideplates with aluminum braces to reduce weight while maintaining strength. Each features an alternating twin pawl anti-reverse design, and four A-RB bearings that are at least 10 times more corrosion resistant than standard stainless steel ball bearings. Both reels retrieve 45-inches of line per crank, with the TYR20 handling 700 yards of 20-pound test line, and up to 330 yards of 40-pound test, while the TYR30 can hold 600 yards of 30-pound test, and up to 350 yards of 50-pound. While still maintaining freespool, the TYR20 and TYR30 have 33-pounds of maximum drag at full, and 16.5-pound of maximum drag at strike.
